The problem of quantum gravity, which consists of constructing a theory of gravity formulated in the language of quantum mechanics and compatible with general relativity, remains unsolved today.

A further conceptual leap forward is expected to be brought about by completing this task. Questions related to the fate of black holes and cosmological singularities suggest that our current theory of spacetime and geometry breaks down into such extreme conditions that it should be replaced by a more fundamental theory of quantum gravity.
